Are you struggling with a sports injury? Whether you’re an elite athlete or a weekend warrior, Dr. Rana Chingappa, a renowned Sports Injury Specialist in South Delhi, is here to help you recover and get back to your best performance. Sports injuries are broadly classified as macro trauma and microtrauma. Macro trauma is acute traumatic injuries to Bones, ligaments, and muscles. We can further classify these injuries according to their severity. Bone injuries can result in fractures while injuries to ligaments and muscles are called sprains and strains respectively.Micro trauma is overuse injuries in sports due to training errors, it might be due to abnormal overloading, suboptimal training surfaces (e.g., too hard or uneven), faulty biomechanics or technique during performance, insufficient motor control, decreased flexibility. Example of microtrauma injuries are stress fractures in bone, Tendinopathy in muscle and tendon.

Tissue Healing

After injuries, soft tissues go to the healing mechanism.

The tissue healing mechanism undergoes three stages that are..

Inflammatory stage

Fibroblastic repairing stage and

Remodeling stage

Tissue Healing

Why Dr. Rana Chingappa is the Best Choice for Sports Injury Treatment in South Delhi:

Sports injury rehab must align with the tissue healing process.

Inflammatory response stage  (PHASE 1)

Inflammatory stage - In this stage, tissues undergo inflammation which is the first step for healing. Several inflammatory mediators are activated during this stage.

Goals of rehab - Dubois and Esculier (2019) gave acronyms  L.O.V.E and P.E.A.C.E to treat soft tissue injuries in phase 1.

P (Protect) - Protect the soft tissue from further damage by restricting the movement.

E (Elevate) -  Elevate the injured tissue above the heart to prevent swelling.

A- Avoid anti-inflammatory medicine

C - Compression

E - Education -  Often times patients get demotivated by injuries so

educating the patient about his or her injury is a crucial step in this phase.

L (Loading ) - Optimal tissue loading with tolerance to pain is advisable in soft tissue injuries as it promotes tissue healing and nutrition to the soft tissue structures.

O (Optimism) - psychological counselling must be done to remove the barrier of fear of failure.

V(Vascularisation) - Light cardiovascular activity must be done to increase the vasularization.

E- Exercise

Fibroblastic Repairing Phase ( Phase 2 )

After the inflammatory stage, tissues start building new cells, more collagen fibers are built up in the injury site.

Treatment stratgies - Low-load stresses must be incorporated into rehab to help in building new collagen fibers.

Rehab exercises:

Submaximal isometrics exercises

Isotonic exercises

Proprioception exercises

Maturation–Remodeling Phase (Phase 3 )

The maturation and remodelling phase is the last phase of  tissue healing. It is considered to be longest phase as more and more collagen fibers are built up at injury site. The tissue tensile strenght is increased during this stage.

Treatment strategies

In this stage athletes undergo advance strengthening to return to their original sports. The tissue is being progressively overloaded over the period of time to gain strength and hypertrophy.

Sports specific training are incorporated in rehab inorder to send the athletes into the competition.
